How to check which nameservers your domain uses

Why this matters

DNS changes must be made where the active nameservers are hosted. Editing records in the wrong place will not affect the live domain.

How to check

  • Look in your domain registrar account.
  • Use a public WHOIS or DNS lookup tool.
  • Compare the result with the nameservers in your hosting welcome email.

Next step

If the domain uses external nameservers, make DNS changes with that provider or switch nameservers if appropriate.
