What DNS records do: A, CNAME, MX and TXT explained

DNS records tell the internet where different services for your domain should go.

A record

An A record points a domain or subdomain to an IPv4 address. It is commonly used to send website traffic to a hosting server.

CNAME record

A CNAME points one hostname to another hostname. It is often used for subdomains, verification records or external services.

MX record

MX records control where email for your domain is delivered.

TXT record

TXT records store text values. They are commonly used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and domain verification.

Important

Changing DNS records can affect your website and email. If you are unsure, ask support before removing existing records.
